Killer Instinct & Killer Instinct 2 - IDE to CompactFlash Installation
Once you have obtained an IDE to CompactFlash adapter, the install process is identical to imaging an original hard drive to a spare. All of that information
has been covered on the main KI page and will not be repeated here. The key to remember when doing this modification is to use
a 44-pin "laptop" IDE to CompactFlash adapter. Using this style adapter eliminates the need for any extra power wires to be run. The adapter is powered from
the KI mainboard (just like the hard drive was), and the results are a nice, clean install.
What do I need to run my KI or KI2 using a CompactFlash card?
You will need:
- An original KI or KI2 hard drive (or hard drive image file)
- A 44-pin IDE to CompactFlash Adapter - NOTE: Search on eBay for "44 CompactFlash IDE"
- The correct size CompactFlash memory card - 256MB for KI, 512MB for KI2
- The appropriate re-programmed 'ANY-IDE' boot ROM (obtained from the KI or KI2 pages).
NOTE: Some of the KI laptop IDE cables have a tiny "pin" installed in one or both of the end connectors so that it can not be installed incorrectly. For the adapter shown, this pin had to be
removed in order to install the cable onto the adapter. Use a needle, razor blade, or a knife with a sharp tip to pry the pin from the end connector, if necessary.
What should the final project look like once installed?
** Remember, the red stripe on the cable should connect to pin 1 on the main KI PCB and pin 1 on the CF adapter!
